Vehicles:The electricity-powered passenger train of Beijing Subway is the major type of vehicle used by Beijing Subway to carry passengers. As Beijing Subway has a long history of development, it has a large number of types and models of trains and the functions of electricity-powered passenger train are becoming more improved. The first generation of train that can still be found now but will stop service soon is the DK2 train produced in 1969(later becoming DK11 after technological renovation), which will be renewed. By far, the latest model is the new type of alternating current powered passenger train. With the progress of Beijing’s subway, there will be more electricity powered trains with more functions and better capabilities for service put into use.  

The electricity connecting mode of subway electricity powered passenger train is generally DC 750V from the third track, with rail gauge being 1435mm and the highest speed being 80km/h. According to the mode of control of electricity powered passenger train, the trains can be classified into the following 3 categories:

The First generation: Cam resistance modulating vehicle, manufactured in 1960s and 1970s, with four models of DK3G,DK20,DK16A,BD1,BD2. Take DK20 for an example. The maximum body length is 19,000(mm),the maximum width is 2,800(mm)and the maximum height is 3,695(mm). The braking mode is electric resistance braking complemented with air braking.  

The Second generation:chopper resistance modulating vehicle(chopper voltage modulating vehicle), produce in the early 1980s and 1990s, with three models of DK11,M and GTO. Take DK11 for an example. The maximum body length is 19,000(mm),the maximum width is 2,600(mm)and the maximum height is 3,510(mm).  

The Third generation: VVVF, produced in 1998 with the models of DKZ4,DKZ5 and the alternating current powered passenger vehicle for Line Ba-Tong. Take DKZ4 for an example. The maximum body length is 19,000(mm),the maximum width is 2,800(mm)and the maximum height is 3,510(mm). The braking mode is regeneration braking complemented with air braking. At present, the models being used for Line 1 are the first generation’s DK20 and BD2 (now 114 vehicles in 19 groups),the second generation’s  DK11(now 78 vehicles in 13 groups),and the third generation’s DKZ4(now 186 vehicles in 31groups). The models used for Line 2 are the first generation’s BD1(now 24 vehicles in 4 groups)and DK16A(now 180 vehicles in 30 groups) . The models being used for Line 13 are the third generation’s DKZ5(now 224 vehicles in 56 groups). The models used for Line Ba-Tong are the transitory vehicles for the second generation’s DK11 and will be replaced by the third generation’s new type of alternating current powered passenger trains.  

Vehicle to be repaired and upgraded: The electricity powered passenger trains of the two models of DK16AG and DK20G, which have served Beijing Subway Line 2 and Line 1for more than ten years, are now outmoded and have frequent breakdowns and great hidden hazards, which made them fail to meet the increasingly higher requirements for the operation of subways. In order to satisfy the need of 2008 Beijing Olympics and fully show the new outlook of Beijing Subway, Beijing Mass Transit Railway Operation Corp. Ltd. set new standards for the workshop-repair of these two models by requiring the foctory to raise the level for fire prevention, redesign the internal and external decoration and fully consider the comfortableness of passengers in train.
